Divergence

Divergence is a modern quilt with some fun appliqued circles in my favorite fabrics.  It's one of those quilts that just happens when your love to play with fabrics and design quilts.   The colors were talking to me and I listened.  It could happen to you also using your favorite fabrics.

Pork Chops with Orange Sauce

Pork Chops with Orange Sauce
Serves about 7 people

About 10-14 thin sliced boneless pork chops

Add 2 tablespoons oil to the frying pan and preheat.

Salt and pepper the pork chops to taste and lightly brown in a frying pan. If needed during browning, add more oil.

Remove pork chops to a plate while you prepare the sauce. If drippings in the pan are excessive remove some. Leave remainder of the drippings for the sauce.

Sauce

1/2 cup catsup
1 1/2 cup orange juice
2 tablespoons orange marmalade

Heat together in a frying pan, using the sauce to deglaze the pan and scrape the pan for meat drippings

Alternate the pork chops and sauce in a crockpot. Cover with Saran Wrap then put on the lid. It will cook faster this way.

Set crockpot to low setting and let cook for about 5-6 hours.

Great served with a baked potato. Freeze leftovers in serving sizes.

The Alzheimers Art Quilt Initiative is Sprinting To The Finish!

 Ami Simms is the Founder & Executive Director of the Alzheimer’s Art Quilt Initiative.

Ami says "The Alzheimer’s Art Quilt Initiative will most likely reach the $1,000,000 mark in money raised for Alzheimer’s research some time in 2013! What began as one person’s response to sorrow and frustration has grown into a national charity embraced by a large portion of the quilting community. More than 13,000 quilts have been donated, turning sweat equity into over $883,000 for research so far. For many donors these quilts were healing works of art which helped them grieve as they stitched for the greater good. Hundreds of thousands of people have seen the AAQI’s two traveling quilt exhibits about Alzheimer’s. Through this artistry came the realization for many that they were not alone on this journey of heartbreak; others understood, perhaps for the first time, what a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s really means. Together quilters have funded 11 research studies at six universities and a medical school. Three more studies will be funded this month and hopefully more throughout 2013. Because of the AAQI, scientists know a little bit more about Alzheimer’s than they did before. Hopefully this understanding will bring us all closer to a cure."

 2013 will be the last year of fundraising for the Alzheimer’s Art Quilt Initiative - help them reach their goal of One Million Dollars for research by the end of 2013.

Important dates below:
February 15, 2013: All bookings for the traveling exhibit “Alzheimer’s Illustrated: From Heartbreak to Hope” must be finalized.
March 1, 2013: First online auction of quilts from “Alzheimer’s Illustrated: From Heartbreak to Hope” traveling exhibit. Twenty-six Name Quilts will be auctioned during the first 10 days of March.
April 1, 2013: A selection of 30 Name Quilts will be auctioned during April. The rest of the Name Quilts will be offered for sale during the Fall.
May, May, June, July, August, and September: We will return to auctioning Priority: Alzheimer’s Quilts. The 54 Priority: Alzheimer’s Quilts from the traveling exhibit will be auctioned during the first 10 days of October and December.
July 2013: Last month to participate in the Quilt-A-Month Club.
August 1, 2013: Last day to register Priority: Alzheimer’s Quilts. Quilts delivered to scanners after August 20 will be refused.
October 1, 2013: Priority: Alzheimer’s Quilts #1-#27 from the traveling exhibit will be auctioned during the first 10 days of the month.
October 29 – November 3, 2013: International Quilt Festival. We hope to be invited back one last time to sell quilts in Houston, TX.
November 1-10, 2013: Celebrity Invitational Quilt Online Auction
December 1 2013: Priority: Alzheimer’s Quilts #28-#54 from the traveling exhibit will be auctioned during the first 10 days of the month.
December 30, 2013: Last day Priority: Alzheimer’s Quilts can be purchased online.
December 31, 2013: Quilts For Sale and Donation pages will be removed from the AAQI website and all solicitations will cease.

Made by me for my grandson Josiah's birthday. I didn't get it don exactly on time but no worries - he liked it!!!

Salmon with Brown Sugar Glaze

Set oven to 400 degrees.

4 salmon filets

Butter/oil  a baking dish that just fits the salmon.

Place salmon in dish skin side down.

Mix together in a small bowl:

3 Tablespoons brown sugar, packed

3 Tablespoons orange juice

3 Tablespoons soy sauce

Pour over the salmon and bake for 8-10  minutes.

Delicious served with potatoes or wild rice.

Lauren wanted a purple quilt for her 16 th birthday so here it is finally finished.

It's such a fun and whimsical design, great for a small child. It was designed by my daughter Yvette Jones who is an award winning graphic designer. Her recent foray into quilt designs has been very successful and I love working with her.

Gift for a friend

My quilt is finished and into the hands of happy new owners.  One of the interesting features of this quilt is the variegated red and white thread we used for the machine quilting.  the center was from a magazine pattern and then I took off on my own.  I wanted a bigger quilt that focused more on the white than the red.    It created a bit of a lost and found effect and was not as harsh as an all red would have been.  It was quilted by Kathy Carbine of The Stitching Corner in Orem.  

Book Review of "Build Your Best Log Cabin"

"Build Your Best Log Cabin" is presented by Love of Quilting Magazine and Fons and Porter.

This is a great quilting reference book for your elibrary.  It has good tutorials on the three most popular styles of Log Cabin Blocks, the traditional, the courthouse steps and  the chevron.  Four quilts are presented with complete instructions as well as some additional tutorials on binding techniques.  Many layout versions are and size options are given.

I think my favorite quilt was the "Bears in Bertie's Log Cabin" quilt by Ricky Tims.  His choice of color, as always, was striking.  The combination and placement of the Log Cabin block and the Bear Paw block was innovative.  He shares some tips on bobbin work with trapunto as well as machine quilting ideas for this quilt.

Batiks were featured in "On the Dark Side" quilt by Lori Christianson.  The pattern is well written and an easy beginner pattern.

Another creative quilt was "Woven" which utilizes careful color placement to achieve the design.  Kudos to Shon McMain for this contemporary quilt.

And how about that Linked Chevrons quilt by Marti Michell.  Such a clever use of a courthouse step block intertwining.

I'm having so much fun making blue Hexies for my daughters quilt. It's a collaboration because she is embroidering all the centers.
