Another gift finished
I designed this quilt to showcase my granddaughter Ella's handprints, thus the abundance of letter E's. The handprints were embellished by her talented mother, Yvette Jones, of Studio Y Design. Yvette is collaborating with me on some new quilt ideas. Look for them after the first of the year.

Yes that's really ice
They are so perfect they must be plastic but a close look showed the water dripping off as the ice melts. They must make these fresh every day. Kudos to The Shops at Riverwoods.

From another view
This year my daughter Yvette accompanied me to quilt market in Houston. Yvette is a graphic designer and owns Studio Y Design. She helps me at Pink Hippo in all my graphics work and web design work. It was such fun to see the market through her eyes and I learned a lot from the trip. Here is Part 1 of her blog posting recapping the market. http://studioydesign.blogspot.com/2011/10/quilt-market-2011-recap-part-one.html
Quilt Market 2011 Recap: Part One
You may be wondering what quilts have to do with graphic design, but there is actually quite a large overlap! I had the wonderful opportunity to go with my talented mom to Quilt Market in Houston, Texas, to see her quilt designs displayed at the Riley Blake booth and be inspired by the wonderful talent found there. I was personally inspired for my own designs by the gorgeous color palettes, beautiful patterns found in the fabrics, whimsical logo designs and the vast array of layouts in the quilts. The booths themselves are also great examples of design, branding, marketing and merchandising in and of themselves. There was so much to see and take in, it was a visual feast!
In part one I'm going to feature the Riley Blake booth and the quilt patterns designed by mother, Marian Gallian of Pink Hippo Quilts:
Marian Gallian of Pink Hippo Quilts showing her published quilt in front of the Riley Blake booth.
Marian in front of the Decadence line by Samantha Walker. Her quilt "Fall Frenzy" is just to her right.
"L'Amour est Trouvé" quilt pattern by Pink Hippo Quilts is in the lower right corner. This quilt was made with Lost & Found fabric designed by My Mind's Eye for Riley Blake.
Marian next to her "American HIstory" quilt design (lower quilt). The fabric line, Grandma's House, was designed by The Paper Loft for Riley Blake Designs.
"Garden Squares" quilt pattern made with Fiona's Fancy fabric designed by Lila Tueller for Riley Blake Designs.
One of the highlights of the booth was the "Sophie's Pinwheel" quilt designed and made by Marian Gallian of Pink Hippo Quilts. The fabric is called So Sophie and was designed by My Mind's Eye for Riley Blake.

Carnation Fields
The Utah Quilt Guild annual Festival is on now in Provo at the Marriott. I used this occassion to debut my new quilt in the vendor mall at the Stitching Corners booth. It's made from Northern Cardinals by Moda and is a simple and fun pattern. Northern Cardinals was designed by Holly Taylor. The colors of the fabric are very dark red and dark green. It has a very rich look to it. It's actually darker than the picture show.

A new Quilt Preview
Krishna Temple
As I was taking a road trip yesterday I came upon the Krishna Temple in Salem Utah. I thought I would stop and take a picture and share. I was remembering the 60's and 70's when every airport and gathering crowd had lots of Hare Krishna missionaries there proselytizing the crowd. Not something you see often today.

Two new patterns released this week!
These are both personal favorites of mine. I love the Lucky Cowgirl pattern. Maybe it was all those rodeo's I went to in St. George or maybe it's just the fun I had in embellishing the quilt. This is the first time I tried to glitz a quilt and I'm afraid I'm hooked. This fabric was designed by my friend Samantha Walker and Riley Blake Designs. The line is called "Wanna Be A Cowboy 2".
The Child's Garden is in colors that I have not worked with often, but I love them. It was such a fun quilt to make even though it looks complicated it was easy to put together. It was designed with fabric from the "Penny Lane" line by Riley Blake designs. The fabric was designed by Deena Rutter for My Mind's Eye and Riley Blake Designs.

Pam Holland shares her inspirations
I watched an amazing video today on The Quilt Show blog. Pam Holland shares her inspirations from museums. She is widely traveled and she lives down under (i. e. Australia). I hope you can find the time to watch it too. I find her fun to listen to because of her wonderful australian accent. My favorite quilt is the Rhino which was inspired by Albert Durer's Rhino. Due to copyright I don't think I can publish a picture here but you can see it in the video.

Summer of Love
I'm excited to announce my first pattern for the new year - "Summer of Love". I designed it from one of Riley Blakes new fabric lines, "Feeling Groovy" by doodlebug design inc. I chose to accent the pink and brown colorways and incorporate hearts and daisies into my design. It's 100 % cotton. There's lot of applique there which makes me happy. The original quilt will be on display at the offices of Riley Blake Designs and Christensen Wholesale for the next several months as well as other locations.

Catnip
Thanks to the Quiltique staff for information on the cat pattern below. The pattern is called Catnip and it was designed by Sew Special Designs. Did I mention that Quiltique is one of my favorite quilt stores. When I lived in Las Vegas I stopped by there often to shop. Their selection of fabrics is wonderful as is the ambiance of the store. I love Valentines
I'm so glad February is here. I can now hang Valentine quilts. I started this quilt over Christmas vacation and finished it last month. It's now hanging as my first valentines quilt. I decided to decorate for the holidays with theme quilts on the walls. It feels so good.
The center of this quilt was designed by Cheryl Almgren Taylor. It's from a pattern called Garden of Hearts. It was featured in the January/February 2011 issue of McCalls's Quilting. But when I got to the border I got carried away making all those appliqued hearts and changed the rest of the quilt. The bonus was this all came out of my stash. So this is my first stashbuster for 2011.
Also hanging on the wall for Valentines is my favorite red cat quilt. I finally finished this last year and have enjoyed it on my wall ever since. I tried to find my original pattern so I can give the author credit, but did not succeed. I bought the kit at Quiltique in Las Vegas. If anyone knows the name of this quilt please contact me.
